Ⅰ. How Does a Harmonic Drive Work?

The harmonic reducer is composed of fixed internal teeth, rigid wheels, flexible wheels, and a harmonic generator that makes the flexible wheels radially deform. The harmonic gear speed reducer is a new type of transmission structure in the gear speed reducer, which uses the flexible gear to generate a controllable elastic deformation wave and then causes the teeth of the rigid wheel and the flexible wheel to be relatively misaligned to transmit power and motion. This kind of transmission is essentially different from general gear transmission and has a particularity in meshing theory, ensemble calculation, and structural design.

The harmonic gear speed reducer has the advantages of high precision and high bearing capacity. Compared with the ordinary speed reducer, its volume and weight are reduced by at least 1/3 since 50% less material is used.

A harmonic speed reducer is a kind of harmonic drive, which includes a harmonic accelerator and harmonic gearhead. During the transmission process, the wave generator makes one revolution, and the number of cycles of deformation of a certain point on the flexible wheel is called the wavenumber, which is represented by n, commonly used are two-wave and three-wave. The flexible wheel of the dual-wave transmission has less stress, enjoys a relatively simple structure, and is easy to obtain a large transmission ratio.

Harmonic speed reducer mainly includes rigid wheel, flexible wheel and wave generator, which are all indispensable.

Ⅱ. The number of teeth of the rigid wheel of the harmonic speed reducer is slightly larger than that of the flexible wheel

1. The length of the wave generator is larger than the diameter of the inner circle of the undeformed flex wheel: when the harmonic drive wave generator is installed into the inner circle of the flex wheel, the flexible wheel is forced to elastically deform into an elliptical shape, so that the teeth of the flexible wheel at the long axis are inserted into the tooth grooves of the rigid wheel and become fully meshed; while the teeth of the two wheels at the short axis are not in contact at all and are in a disengaged state. During the process from engagement to disengagement, it is in the state of being engaged or disengaged.

2. When the wave generator rotates continuously: the flexible wheel of the harmonic gearhead is forced to deform continuously, so that the teeth of the two wheels continuously change their respective working states during the process of meshing, engaging and disengaging, thus generating the so-called staggered tooth motion. Thereby it can realize the motion transmission between the active wave generator and the flexible wheel.
